Farmington, New Mexico
I had to go to Farmington, New Mexico so I went on the nature trail by my hotel. It was along a river. The river is still contaminated from a mine in Silverton, Colorado. There are so many ducks!
10 K Trailhead (near death experience)
I had read in a hiking book that this portion of the 10K Trailhead goes under the ski lifts at Sandia Ski Resort. I felt adventurous so I went for the hike.
On Saturday, I hiked at La Luz and on that same day, a man went missing. Today was day 4 of him missing. While I was hiking near the ski lifts, I heard a distress whistle and yelling. The search and rescue helicopter was also flying over. I kept going toward the whistle, it quit. I kept trying to find the person but to no avail. I ended up getting lost by searching for the man. I couldn't find a trail so I decided against my better judgement to go straight down. Dumb Dumb Dumb...... I went down in very thick forest that I am sure had a lot of bears. I kept singing really loud to keep them away. I tripped and fell at least 3 times. I finally ended up at the bottom of the ski area. It was 4 miles away from my car. I did another incredibly dumb thing and took a ride from an old man up to my car.
I hiked 11 miles and was so tired.
The missing hiker was found while I was hiking. He was dead. I didn't report the whistle and another man in that area went missing too. He was found dead the next day. I feel really bad that I wasn't able to find the whistle. Sad.
